an ageing population
Saarland University
Saarland University is a medium-sized university located in the south-west of Germany with about 16,300 students and six faculties. The Werner Siemens-Endowed chair of Innovative Implant Development (Fracture Healing) is a research department within the division of surgery. We deal with fracture healing and the development of intelligent implants for the treatment of bone fractures, using new materials and biomechanical simulations in combination with clinical studies and methods from physiology and computer science.
Role within SmILE
Within the SmILE project, the UdS team will contribute gait and movement data from clinical studies, as well as questionnaire data collected from patients with fractures. Together with the many SmILE partners, UdS will continue to develop methods and parameters that enable the monitoring of bone healing and the early prediction of healing complications. In addition, the team will contribute its expertise in sensor technology and data analysis related to the physiology of bone healing, as well as its clinical knowledge.

Main contacts

We have been working for several years to bring smart fracture implants with sensors and actuators to our patients, and we are excited about the great opportunity to now be part of the SmILE consortium, which is full of expertise and vision to create a better future!
