The CIBER-BBN is a research center dedicated to conducting excellence-driven research aimed at industrial transfer and clinical translation through the development of scientific areas such as bioengineering, biomaterials, and nanomedicine. Specifically, the Nanomaterials and Sensors Design Group (NANOSENS) specializes in the development of sensors and molecular probes for analyte detection, as well as the creation of functionalized nanostructured materials with 'molecular gates' for the controlled release of active compounds, applied to therapy and detection.

Role within SmILE

In the SmILE project, CIBER will contribute to the design and development of smart drug release actuators to integrate on osteosynthesis plates. Within the project framework, we will be able to develop functional electrodes modified with electroresponsive molecules and nanoparticles for antibiotic encapsulation and delivery. These electroresponsive actuators will be integrated into the chip platform developed by our partners to trigger antibiotic release on implants, avoiding bacterial infections.

As CIBER’s mission focuses on biomedical research for clinical translation, we aim to develop smart implants that improve healthcare for the elderly within the SmILE project. This will be achieved through collaboration among consortium partners, bringing together broad expertise in areas such as medical devices, sensors, electronics, biomaterials, project and data management, artificial intelligence, regulatory policies, economic impact assessment, and marketing.
