an ageing population
SmilLE Project Presented at Ageing Deal Conference in Barcelona
On May 8th, the SmIlLE project was featured at the “Life-Course Approach for Healthy Ageing Together” conference in Barcelona. The event took place at the historic Casa Convalescència within the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and brought together leading voices in healthy ageing from across Europe. Organised under the Ageing Deal initiative umbrella, the conference was a joint effort by STAGE and COMFORTage, two Horizon Europe projects focused on innovative approaches to ageing.
The event highlighted the need for collaborative, life-course-based strategies to address the challenges faced by Europe’s ageing population and included a presentation from Arndt-Peter Schulz, coordinator of SmILE. In his presentation, Schulz introduced the project’s goals, structure and technological foundations, outlining how the project aims to develop intelligent implants equipped with telemetry and motion analysis capabilities. This is expected to enable new possibilities for long-term patient monitoring and rehabilitation. The presentation also included a detailed overview of SmilLE’s use cases, which demonstrate the potential of smart implants in real-world clinical scenarios.
The conference featured a range of sessions on integrated care models, digital tools in health systems and citizen empowerment, while workshops offered interactive spaces for knowledge sharing and future collaborations. Projects like SmILE, STAGE and COMFORTage confirm how research and innovation can work together to improve the quality of life for older adults.
With more events and activities expected in the future, the Ageing Deal initiative will continue to promote the idea that ageing should be embraced as a value, not a challenge.
